In the Special Forces, each flash represents the unit a soldier is assigned to, but earning the right to truly wear it comes only after completing the demanding Special Forces Qualification Course. If you don’t pass, you return to a conventional military role. For Lawrence Joustra, these flashes became milestones in a unique journey. He first received the 5th Special Forces Group flash in December 1981, then went on to serve with the 1st Group in 1983, the 3rd Group in 1990, and finally the 7th Group in 1991. Along the way, Lawrence became one of the few officers to serve in so many groups—and even helped create two of them. Each assignment required him to master new languages, adapt to new missions, and take on challenges that shaped his career. While the flashes themselves are symbols of assignment, the real story lies in the experiences, achievements, and memories he shares throughout the chapters of his book.
